Considering the propensity of vampire and zombie movies these days, it is still a surprise to me that there aren’t more werewolves hitting screens both small and silver. Those that do come along are generally a disappointment in some way, but I continue to live in hope.
There have been quite a few films in recent years that sneak themselves in as one genre when they are actually best described as something else. When done successfully, they end up going beyond the notion of established genre and stand on their own as a whole new thing. Today I bring you a sweet love story, hiding inside a road movie, all bundled up as an alien invasion flick. Something for everybody?
Sunday! Glorious Sunday is here again. While most of the UK – if not the world – was watching the men’s final at Wimbledon, I was having lots more fun sitting in front of this little beauty.
Does that say Day 183? That’s right folks, today I hit the halfway point of this year-long insomnia kick. Humpday. It’s all downhill from here. There is actually a movie called Humpday that I might have chosen to review today had the idea occurred to me more than five seconds ago, but instead I give you a French zombie flick. You’re welcome.
As well as my ongoing EIFF coverage, you’re getting a bonus new release today. I figured I should write about a movie that people outside this city would be able to watch without having to wait six months or more. Aren’t you a lucky bunch? Yes, you are!
We’ll also call this Day 172, shall we? Excellent.
How have I not seen this before? Why did none of you tell me about this film sooner? You’re all fired.
So today was the last day of Queen Elizabeth’s weekend-long Diamond Jubilee celebrations here in the UK, of which I saw not one minute. The sacrifices I make for you lot, eh?
When Keith and I were in the pub yesterday doing our Prometheus post-mortem, he suggested this movie for today’s column. He cited it as an example of a sci-fi movie committing to its Big Ideas instead of drowning them in spectacle and shoddy decisions and hoping nobody would notice (sorry Ridley, but you kinda did). I remember this flick getting its original albeit limited cinema run but I was only 15 then, and it was rated 18. I couldn’t face the potential embarrassment of being turned away. And after that awkwardly autobiographical admission, on with the show.
Despite what I said here yesterday, I did try to fit in a documentary today and have this review as well, but it has taken me all afternoon to write this up. Also, I was in the pub. Was I celebrating or was I drowning my sorrows? Read on and find out.
