5-Word 365 #105 – The King Of Kong

Today’s review is going to be considerably shorter than usual. I’m going out to a housewarming tonight, so this is the closest I get to a day off.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Step away from the Playstation.

The story of mathematics teacher Steve Wiebe’s attempt to capture the Donkey Kong record score from the long-standing champ Billy “Dead-Eyes” Mitchell.

This is one of the most exciting sports movies I have watched in a long time. It’s got everything: the scrappy underdog (Wiebe); the hiss-worthy villain (Mitchell); the whiff of conspiracy; even the montages set to Joe Esposito’s You’re The Best Around. One thing this film doesn’t do though, is alter the perception of these fanatic gamers as anything other than total geeks. Out of everyone featured, only Billy and Steve are seen to have families and any kind of life outside the gaming world.

Half a second later, he was wearing that guy’s head like a wristwatch.

Directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), this is a thoroughly enjoyable film that passes all too quickly. Highly recommended.

This movie is great. Billy Mitchell makes an awesome villain.

Go ahead, punk. Make my day.
